Residents of Brownsburg-Chatham can now keep chickens in their yards, but they will have to count them before they are hatched.

On Tuesday, April 2, council adopted a regulation permitting residents of urban zones to keep up to three chickens on their property. Residents of other residential zones will be permitted to keep up to five chickens on their properties.

Only laying hens are allowed. Roosters are prohibited.

The law permits one chicken coop per property. The enclosure outside chicken coops must not exceed five square metres and the roof height of the chicken coop must not exceed 2.5 metres. Chicken coops must be at least two metres from property lines. Chickens must not be caged either.

No chickens are allowed inside homes. Food and water for chickens must be kept in the coop to prevent attracting other animals.

Mayor Kévin Maurice said he supports letting people keep chickens as long as they are meeting the requirements under the law.
