Mark your calendars!

International Day of the Forests is March 21, 2024.

In celebration of the Day, Eco East will host a screening of ‘Call of the Forest – The Forgotten Wisdom of the Trees’ in partnership with Boisés Est, South Nation Conservation and St Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School (Environmental Specialized High Skills Major Class).

The film takes the viewer on a journey through various forests around the world and explores the many benefits to humans, our ecosystems, and the interconnectivity of it all.

Eco East is thrilled and honoured to announce that Diana Beresford-Kroeger, featured scientist (botanist, medical biochemist) in the film, world-renowned advocate, and author of seven (soon to be eight, her new book ‘Our Green Heart – The Soul and Science of Forests’ is scheduled for a release in fall 2024) published books has accepted an invitation to attend the event.

At this in-person event, the film will be shown followed by a discussion panel which will include Diana Beresford-Kroeger, Lisa Deacon (Russell Council member), Jean St-Pierre (local expert with Boisés Est) and Owen Clarkin (local expert and tree educator).

While the film explores the forests of the world it also provides a backdrop to what is happening in our own community.

In recent months there has been considerable concern raised by Russell Township residents regarding clear cutting on Boundary Road in particular.

According to Global Forest Watch the United Counties of Prescott and Russell are experiencing the highest rates of deforestation in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

This event is an opportunity to learn about our inherent dependence on the forest system to sustain life in this region and to celebrate the mystery and beauty of forest ecosystems.

The film is in English with French subtitles available. The screening takes place on Thursday, March 21.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the start time is 6:30 p.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School Atrium, 1211 South Russell Road, in Russell. Entry is free, but donations are welcome. E-transfer donations in any amount to [email protected], or cash donations will be accepted at the door.
