According to the Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB), the unemployment rate across Prescott-Russell, Stormont-Dundas, and Glengarry, and Cornwall for the first month of the year was 5.1 per cent. The unemployment rate for Ontario in January 2024 was 5.1 per cent. In the City of Ottawa, the unemployment rate was 4.9 per cent in January. The EOTB obtains its information from Statistics Canada. The lower unemployment rate in Eastern Ontario continues a trend seen through late 2023.

Home support workers and caregivers were the occupations in greatest demand across the region in January. This was followed by transport truck drivers, retail salespersons, food service supervisors, and other customer services and information representatives.

In January, there were 451 online job postings across the region served by the EOTB, an increase of 24 from December, 2023. Out of those postings, 19 indicated hybrid or remote work was available, and 216 of the postings were on employer websites.

The employers issuing the five-greatest number of job postings across the EOTB’s territory in January were the Upper Canada District School Board, Walmart, meat packing company Olymel, Cornwall Community Hospital, ParaMed Home Care, and Bayshore Healthcare.
