Hydro-Québec is getting ready to rehabilitate the spillway at the Carillon hydroelectric station and is seeking input from the public.
The spillway has 12 gates and allows excess water to bypass the part of the dam where the generating units are located. During periods of high-water flows on the Ottawa River in the spring or after major weather events, the spillway is often a raging torrent. The structure is now more than 60 years old and in need of rehabilitation.
According to Hydro-Québec, the project will include determination of sensitive elements, work impacts, and necessary mitigation measures, assessment of the need to intervene on embankment dikes around the station, and refurbishment of the spillway.
Public consultation is taking place in 2024. In 2025, Hydro-Québec will announce the selected solution for the rehabilitation project. From 2026 to 2027, the design and permitting process will take place, and work is to begin in 2028.
