A familiar gathering place in Alfred has been added to the list of community halls now owned and operated by the local municipality.

On Friday, February 2, the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet announced it has acquired the Knights of Columbus (Chevaliers de Colomb) Hall located at 520 rue St-Philippe in Alfred. It will be now known as the Alfred Community Centre.

The township is presenting the decision to acquire the hall as a strategic one which will benefit of the township’s citizens for years to come.

“This hall has been part of the Alfred community landscape for generations. It has hosted countless shows, carnivals, banquets, weddings, bingos, family gatherings and community celebrations over the years,” Mayor Yves Laviolette said.

“The municipal council had a duty to preserve this meeting place, for the greater benefit the citizens of Alfred and the Township. We would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for this opportunity and their continued cooperation,” Laviolette added.

“The Knights of Columbus are pleased to hand over this hall to the municipality. Faced with the growing workload involved in managing the community hall, the Knights wanted to collaborate with the Township to ensure efficient, long-term management of this valuable space,” Grand Knight Rhéal Lalonde said.

With the addition of the Alfred Knights of Columbus Hall, the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet now has six community centers. The newly acquired facility has a capacity of around 400 people. The centre also has a secondary room that can accommodate up to 69 people. Bar service is available.
