In the fall of 2021 we were subjected to a great deal of pressure to “do something about bringing back live music to Vankleek Hill.” At first we resisted because there were no available venues but the pressure  continued.

Finally we relented and with the support of the Creating Centre  and the Broken Kettle we programmed a seven-concert series. Session 1 drew 4 people, session 2 drew 1 person, session 3 drew 15 and session 4 has sold 5 tickets with 2 days to go.

The cost to attend these performances was $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  After paying for the room, musicians received 100 per cent of the door with a minimum of $100 guaranteed. Saken is a not-for-profit organization, but we are not an operate-at-a-loss organization, so due to the lack of response from the community the March 16 concert and all subsequent shows have been cancelled.

It is interesting to point out that none of those who encouraged us to embark on this endeavor attended any of the shows.

Live music depends on “bums in chairs” to succeed. I fear for the future of live music in Vankleek Hill, a town that was once known as a hub for live music in this area.
