Lachute council approved several resolutions when it last met on October 4 for its final regular meeting before the November 7 municipal election.

Council adopted a resolution requesting the MRC d’Argenteuil declare the Synercité industrial park an innovation zone. The emphasis of Synercite is to create a circular economy, anchored by the Tricentris recycling plant, which sorts glass received at the facility for reprocessing into new glass. Another business – which will reprocess plastic products into fuel – plans to locate in the industrial park.

The motion to adopt the resolution was moved by Councillor Guylaine Desforges and seconded by Councillor Serge Lachance.

Storm sewers and water filtration plant

Councillor Denis Richer moved a notice of motion for the town of Lachute to authorize up to $1 million in spending on the replacement of municipal storm sewers that traverse private land between avenue d’Argenteuil et avenue Lorraine. Councillor Alain Lanoue moved to table the regulation for the project.

An additional $12,125.24 in work on the chemin Dunany water filtration plant is required. The $5.2 million project has been ongoing throughout 2021 and received $3,366,400 from the Québec and federal governments. The town of Lachute’s initial contribution was $1,833,600.

Director-General Benoît Gravel said the plant will be gradually returned to service when the work is complete.

The resolution to approve the additional expenses was moved by Lachance and seconded by Councillor Hugo Lajoie.

Library project and road repairs

Supplementary work on the roof of the former Lachute United Church building was approved by council on October 4, as the project continues to make the building into the town’s new library.

According to Mayor Carl Peloquin, the $20,300 job will complete the roof work before the town can call for the final contract to repair the windows. The resolution to approve the additional spending on the library project was moved by Lajoie and seconded by Richer.

Paving work is complete on rue Laurier and rue Dupre near the hospital in Lachute, but there are outstanding costs for professional fees associated with the supervision of the project. On October 4, Lanoue moved that council approved the town pay $15,880 in professional fees. The resolution was seconded by Councillor Patrick Cadieux.

On October 4, Lachute council approved spending an additional $207,525.40 for the complete reconstruction of all infrastructure on part of rue Georges and rue Evelina. Council also approved spending $87,305 for additional work required due to the discovery of contaminated soil found at the site.

 Gilbert Wilkes rink

The outdoor rink at Parc Ayers in Lachute will be named after the late Gilbert Wilkes. The longtime promoter of youth sports, particularly hockey, died on July 5, 2020.

Wilkes had helped establish the first outdoor rink in the Ayersville neighborhood, and along with his support for youth hockey, had co-founded a seniors hockey league. The town received a petition of 1,000 signatures requesting the rink be named after Wilkes.

Lajoie moved the approval of the resolution to name the Parc Ayers rink after Gilbert Wilkes. Richer seconded the motion.
