Five arrested in alleged cell phone theft in Lachute

At around 4:30 p.m. on February 14, MRC d’Argenteuil Sûreté du Québec (SQ) officers were notified that there was a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping center on Avenue Bethany Avenue in Lachute. The person who reported the suspicious vehicle to the police mentioned that people hid the license plate when they were seen by the witness. The witness gave a description of the suspects and said the vehicle was parked where at a shopping cart storage area. The police attended and noticed the vehicle and found that it did not have a license plate. A suspect approached the vehicle, and two women attempted to flee when they saw police. A police officer saw a man flee on foot in the parking lot of the shopping center where he was quickly arrested. A witness told the officer that there was a second vehicle accompanying them and with the description, the officers were able to locate and intercept the vehicle further away with one person inside it.

The five suspects were transported to the SQ station for investigation. During the incidental search, the police found that a person had hidden something under a dress. During the search of the suspects, police seized 42 cell phones from one person and 50 cell phones from another person.

Two men aged 36 and 38, along with a young man and two underage girls, from Ontario, were detained by police.

They were all scheduled to appear on Monday at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse to face possible charges of concealment and theft.

The investigation is continuing to identify locations where some of the phones may have been stolen and to locate a sixth suspect.
