The number of active cases of COVID-19 across the jurisdiction of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) was 250 as of Tuesday, December 22. There have been 1,223 cumulative cases under EOHU jurisdiction since the pandemic began. As of Tuesday, the number of deaths remained at 32. Five COVID-19 patients under EOHU jurisdiction were in hospital and two of those patients were in intensive care as of December 22.
All municipalities under EOHU jurisdiction are now under the Ontario government`s Orange-Restrict designation for COVID-19 control. However, the entire region will be part of the provincewide shutdown that was announced by Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Health Christine Elliott, and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams on Monday, December 21. The shutdown takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, December 26 (Boxing Day) and is to remain in effect for 28 days. The shutdown will affect most non-essential businesses. They will have to provide pickup or delivery service only. Bars and restaurants will only be permitted to provide take-out or delivery service.
As of Tuesday, 91,616 COVID-19 tests had been performed at the six testing and assessment facilities and by paramedics across the EOHU’s territory.
Schools
As of December 22, the largest school outbreak of COVID-19 under EOHU jurisdiction was in a dormitory at the Al-Rashid Islamic Institute, a religious boarding school at the eastern edge of Cornwall on Highway 2.

Ontario situation
According to the Ontario Ministry of Health, there were 19,300 active cases of COVID-19 across the province as of December 21. There were 2,202, or 1.4 per cent more active cases on December 21 than on December 20.
On December 21, the Ministry reported that 136,767 or 85.3 per cent of cumulative cases were resolved. Resolved cases do not include deaths.
There were 1,005 COVID-19 patients in hospital across Ontario as of December 21. Out of those 1,005 patients, 273 were in intensive care, and 172 patients were on ventilators.
There had been 4,188 deaths due to COVID-19 across Ontario as of December 21, comprising 2.6 per cent of all cumulative cases.
