Twenty years ago, Lisa Rowlands decided she wanted to start a business that would reflect her love of animals. From her home on the west Island of Montreal, she and her husband Daniel Martineau spent two years driving around the area before they found the 1890 log house on 30 acres where they now live.

“The house had been abandoned for 10 years,” Lisa says. “It took us a year to renovate it.” Nineteen years ago, she opened Cedarbank Pet Boarding, with 15 runs for the dogs and cats she boards, plus trails through the woods for the horses.

“It was really the property that brought us here,” she notes. “But I love the events in Vankleek Hill, such as the Festival of Flavours, and the way people drop in on us to see how we’re doing.” The property is also home to two dogs, two cats, four horses, a mule, a pony, rabbits and hedgehogs.
