he Ontario government is providing the heroes who served our country in the Canadian Armed Forces more opportunities to bring their skills and experience to rewarding careers in the Ontario Public Service (OPS).

Effective November 6, 2020, veterans will be allowed to pursue new jobs and careers that were previously restricted to those already working in the OPS. This change is due to a recent update to the Public Service Commission Employment Policy.

“Canadian Armed Forces veterans possess strong leadership skills and we recognize the diverse training and experience they can bring to the Ontario Public Service,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, President of the Treasury Board. “We owe the men and women who served our nation a debt that we could never repay. Making it easier for those interested in pursuing a career in the public service is one small way we can demonstrate our gratitude.”

Veterans Affairs Canada considers any former member of the Canadian Armed Forces who releases with an honourable discharge and who successfully underwent basic training to be a veteran. Veterans come from both the Regular and Reserve Force.

“As we pause this Remembrance week to reflect on the tremendous sacrifices our veterans made for our province, and our country, I think it’s fitting to provide them with greater opportunities to start a second career in the Ontario Public Service,” said Lisa Thompson, Minister of Government and Consumer Services. “I encourage military veterans and their families to log onto the OPS Careers site or call our military families hotline for more information on supports that are available to them.”

OPS career opportunities open to the public and additional information, including frequently asked questions for veterans, can be found on the OPS Careers site at: www.gojobs.gov.on.ca. The OPS is working with Veterans Affairs Canada to help promote eligible OPS job opportunities through veterans’ My VAC accounts.

The OPS has launched a hotline and resource hub for military families – Ontario.ca/militaryfamilies – which helps veterans find and access resources for themselves and their families.
