Angeleen Larocque says it started with a few friends who got to talking about a group for families and kids that would have family events and community volunteering at its core.
“We are from a generation that is used to volunteering, but our generation wants to do more,” said Larocque, who lives with her husband and four children in L’Orignal. She works part-time at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital.
A barbecue was organized recently around the third annual fishing derby in L’Orignal. The event was advertised on Facebook she said, which is where the group called “Familles L’Orignal Families” is based. That was a successful outing for families, she said.
A meeting to move the group forward took place recently with community partners, volunteers and representation from Champlain Township.
“We had some good discussion and we talked about events, and how to move ahead,” Larocque said. Another meeting will happen before the community garage sale, which is set to take place on May 26 on Court Street, she says.
Free tables, provided to the group by the township, are being offered to anyone who wants to join in the garage sale on Court Street, Larocque said. Set-up is at 6:30 a.m. and the garage sale takes place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information on the yard sale, email: [email protected]
The restaurant located at the Old Jail will be open for the garage sale, she noted.
Larocque says that one of the main purposes of the new group is to provide cohesiveness and to reach out to volunteers.
“Whatever people can offer, even just to run errands, will be appreciated. We just want to create fun events for our families and the community,” said Larocque, who promises that the group answers emails promptly.
