Dr. Joe Schwarcz of McGill University, also known as “Dr. Joe” from television and radio, will speak about nutrition and the often-contradictory information surrounding food — at a dinner meeting of the Hawkesbury section of the Chemical Institute of Canada, on Wednesday, April 11.

Professor Schwarcz has received numerous awards for teaching chemistry and interpreting science to the public and is well-known for his entertaining lectures on topics ranging from the chemistry of love to the science of aging. “Dr. Joe” appears regularly on the Discovery channel, has a weekly radio show and a newspaper column, and is the author of a number of best-selling books. He has spoken to the Hawkesbury section on several occasions over the past 18 years, and his audience can be assured of a highly entertaining evening.

Eating has become a confusing experience. Virtually every day brings news about some “miracle food” that we should be gulping down. It may be blueberries to prevent cancer, flaxseed against heart disease, soybeans for menopause, or green coffee bean extract for weight loss. Then there are the worries: food additives, gluten, pesticide residues, GMOs, antibiotics, meat consumption. We need proper science to guide us through this nutritional maze.

The meeting will be held on the second floor of Restaurant Carole, 292 Main Street East, Hawkesbury. Dinner is at 6 p.m. on April 11 and the lecture will start at 8 p.m. The general public is welcome, but anyone wishing to attend either the lecture alone or both the dinner and lecture is asked to call Elliott Gardner at (613) 632-8592 or Don Mutton at (613) 632-3331 before 5 p.m. on Monday, April 9.
