BROWNSBURG-CHATHAM – The municipal authorities of Brownsburg-Chatham held an informational meeting on January 29th at the Salle Communautaire Louis-Renaud, with citizens living near the Orica site.
Members of the Orica management team discussed upcoming demolition work planned for March 3 on the company’s land.
Patrick Goldfinch, Safety, Health, and Environment Manager, explained that the planned demolition work is part of a vast project that started in 2015, and helps to assure the sustainability of operations at the Orica Brownsburg-Chatham site. To date, 30 obsolete buildings have already been demolished.

The work planned for March 3rd is particular as controlled burning will be used to demolish a building that can’t be torn down with conventional methods.
“Orica has used this method safely and successfully last year on this site, as well as elsewhere in the past around the world. It is the safest and preferred method for demolition” explained Goldfinch. He also provided details that teams of firefighters will be present during and after the burning operations, and during surveillance periods. “Citizens will see intense flames and smoke elevating in the sky, however there will be no threats to the health and safety of the citizens living in proximity to the burning area. The burning will be controlled and more than 115 meters from the site property line, which is in compliance with the plan approved by the Brownsburg-Chatham Fire Safety
Services.”
The citizens also learned about the preventive and emergency measures put in place by the City of Brownsburg-Chatham. These plans minimize the impact from the burning operations, particularly for the residents of Saint-Joseph Street, who are the closest residents to the burning installations. Residents (or citizens) will also have access to additional information via a website and phone line, which will be updated frequently during the burning operations.
