Charles Aznavour? Gilbert Bécaud? Are those names that bring back pleasant memories?
These two performers are just like French cuisine: a delicacy, according to Théâtre Cercle Gascon II.
Charles Aznavour is now 93 years old, and still touring the world as part of what he calls his final and ultimate world farewell tour. At the turn of the new millennium, CNN network and Time magazine conducted a world survey as to who was the world’s top entertainer for the past century. Voters worldwide elected Charles Aznavour as #1, ahead of such other world celebrities and icons as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. Although he sings in eight languages, Aznavour is mostly known as a French singer. His hit-song “She”, made universally famous by Elvis Costello, is a milestone.
As for Gilbert Bécaud, he left this world at the turn of the century, a victim of cancer.
Two of his songs became huge international hits and were recorded by multiple artists. “What now, my love?” and “Let it be me” are still played in karaoke bars around the world! Gilbert was also a close collaborator and friend of Neil Diamond, with whom he co-wrote “September Morn” and “Love on the Rocks”.
Both Aznavour and Bécaud were mentored by the great Edith Piaf, as she helped kick-start their respective careers in show business.
This year, Théâtre Cercle Gascon II, Hawkesbury’s unique francophone community theatre group, is celebrating its 35th anniversary and has chosen to present a musical tribute to Aznavour and Bécaud, called, “Hommage à Charles et Gilbert, written by local author Pierre Bédard, as a special fundraiser for the non-profit organization.
Louise Potvin-Laliberté, the theatre’s president, acted both as musical and staging director.
Mathieu Beaussart and Claude Langlois are featured as part of an 11-member cast that will share the stage. There are only four (4) presentations, taking place February 9, 10 and 11.
