The Editor,
Many of us in Vankleek Hill have become familiar with the concept of random acts of kindness as we benefit from and are inspired by Lisa and Mark Henderson’s gifts to our community in celebration of their business’ 50th anniversary.
I witnessed another kind act this week, which I would like to share with you.
First, a bit of background …
I organize a concert series in Vankleek Hill at Arbor Gallery for Home Routes, a national network of house concerts.
Hundreds of musicians apply and audition for the privilege of being among the six performers or groups chosen for each of ten national circuits.
The music they play covers the whole gamut of folk, world, and blues. The venues provide an intimate audience experience of being “up close and personal” with world-class musicians. There is nothing quite like it!!
My husband and I and other volunteers in Vankleek Hill happily put up the musicians, feed them supper and breakfast, and then send them on their way, to the next town or village.
I was advertising on Facebook our third concert of the season. This will be with a duo from Newfoundland, Dan Rubin and Dave Panting, Tanglecove. One of our regular attendees commented on my post. She regretted she could not be there because she is in the midst of medical treatment which has left her immune system fragile. Dan Rubin read this and immediately offered to come to Vankleek Hill early in the day so that he and Dave could do a private performance, just for her, before their evening concert.
I am in awe when someone hears of a situation like this and responds with such an open heart.
It’s a simple thing, I guess, but it seems to make all the difference.
Sincerely yours,
Pat Deacon,
Vankleek Hill
