It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Claire Hunter, aged 77, who passed away peacefully at her home in Hawkesbury on September 8, 2025, with her family at her side. She was born on December 22, 1947, to parents Roderick MacRae and Helen (Durant) MacRae. Raised on a small farm near Hawkesbury, Claire grew up in a lively household with five sisters and one brother. She was predeceased by her brother Howard (Micheline), and sisters Ann (Irwin) and Alexina (late Arnold). She is fondly remembered by her sisters Ruby (late Earl), Lily (late Rheal), and Heather (late William). She will be missed by several nieces and nephews, whom she remained close to over the years. Claire was a devoted, supportive and loving mother to Beverly and the late Deborah, and a very proud grandmother to Kyle (Juli) and Hailey, who affectionately called her “Gammy.” Being a grandmother was the greatest joy of her life—her happiest years were spent baking, laughing, giving hugs, and making memories with her grandchildren, especially during the holidays when her famous Nanaimo Bars made their yearly appearance. She dedicated many years of her life as a compassionate caregiver working in local nursing homes, always showing kindness and patience to those in her care. Claire enjoyed reading, embroidery, and doing puzzles which helped to keep her mind so sharp. Claire also cherished family gatherings in Virginia, to celebrate birthdays, holidays, or graduations and to visit her sweet senior cat Silver who passed just days prior to Claire. She was a lady who showed great strength and courage over the past few years, but always maintained her warm, kind and loving spirit. A memorial service to celebrate Claire’s life was held on September 15, 2025, at Hillcrest Funeral Home in Vankleek Hill. In Claire’s memory, donations may be made to your local animal shelter—reflecting her lifelong love of animals.
“On angel’s wings you were taken away,
But in our hearts, you will always stay”
She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by her family.
