Howes, Carmin

Oct 4, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Carmin Lloyd Howes on Wednesday October 2, 2024, at the Hawkesbury General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Doreen (née MacLeod) and a loving father to Mitzi Dandy (Scott) and Melissa Lowe (Jeff). Carmin was admired and deeply loved by his grandchildren, Hayden (Ashley), Jared, Ben, and Abbey, as well as his great-grandson, Brooks, the most recent light of his life. Predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Edith Howes (née Barton), Carmin is remembered as a devoted brother to his wonderful siblings: Shirley (Stella), Murray (late Lillian), Lois Mealey, Ray (Linda), the late Dorothy Read (Dave), Garry, Donna McMillan (Wayne), Lyle (Barbara), Harold (Kathy), and Connie Davison (Ken). He also adored his many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbours. An admired farmer, Carmin earned the Master Breeder Shield in 1986 and was recently inducted into the Glengarry Agricultural Hall of Fame. His proudest moment and best day in the show ring came in 1987 when his cow “ Marlene” was named Grand Champion at the Eastern Ontario Western Quebec Show. He was an innovative farmer performing crop and soil research for educational purposes. After retiring and selling the farm, to keep busy he turned to woodworking taking classes at VCI and became talented enough to make his grandchildren furniture such as sleigh beds, desks and memory boxes for them to fill. His creativity also extended to writing, and he penned a book of personal stories after joining a writing group. Family and friends were invited to a celebration of Carmin’s life on Saturday October 5, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a sharing of memories at 2:30 p.m., at the Vankleek Hill Fair Grounds, 92 Main St. W, Vankleek Hill. In accordance with Carmin’s wishes, a private family burial was held at St. Columba Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the St. Columba Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, the Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. To honour Carmin’s memory, a Tree of Remembrance will be planted in the McAlpine Forever Forest in Vankleek Hill. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home, 151 Bond Street, Vankleek Hill, Ontario, K0B 1R0.
