Charlebois, Mathieu

Nov 1, 2022

It is with tremendous sadness, but in celebration of a life well lived, that the family of Mathieu Charlebois announces his passing on October 27, 2022 at the age of 96. Born in St-Bernardin, Ontario, September 22, 1926, he married Thérèse Méthot on May 25, 1950 and moved to McCrimmon’s Corner to their dairy farm from which they retired to Alexandria in 1979. He was the cherished father of Joanne (Michael Crawford), Sylvie and Daniel (Janis Freeman). Predeceased by his parents, Léopold and Agnès Charlebois, his beloved wife, Thérèse of 70 years, and his son, Gilles (Michelle Paiment). Cherished grandpapa of Julie Downes (Dave Delugt), Patrick Downes, David Downes (Taylor Sawadsky), Luke Charlebois, Rachael Charlebois (Kieran O’Kelly), and David Turgeon. Much loved brother of Réjeanne Charlebois (Bernard Lamoureux – deceased), Germain Charlebois (Lucy Rhodenizer), and Richard Charlebois (Rollande Séguin). He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Estelle Denis (Roger Charlebois – deceased) and Marie-Jeanne Levac (Jean-Paul Charlebois – deceased). Mathieu was also the loved brother-in-law of Thérèse’s family: Sophie (Émile Levac – deceased), Marguerite (André Lalonde – deceased), Liliane (Vincent Levac), Andréa Dubois, Marie- Reine (Paul Brown), Yvonne Méthot – deceased, Emile Méthot – deceased (Fernande Gratton – deceased), and Stella Méthot – deceased (André Leroux). Sisters/brothers in-law loved Mathieu more as a father or brother than an in-law. He will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, and friends. Mathieu was a man with a big heart. It had to be, to hold all the ones he loved, and all those who loved him. As in life, Mathieu met death, with dignity and grace, surrounded by the love and light of his family. Mathieu grew up on a farm and brought his love of the land, his strong work ethic, and his young bride, Thérèse, to their McCrimmon’s Corner family farm. Here, they raised their children imparting the solid values of hard work, honesty, and the immense love of family. Mathieu was a ‘people person’, in every sense of the word, and took a sincere interest in everyone he met. Sense of community was of utmost importance to Mathieu. He gave generously of his time and energy as a dedicated volunteer to numerous organizations. Mathieu was a long-time Eucharistic Minister at L’Église du Sacré Coeur in Alexandria. He also served on the Board of Directors of The United Co-operatives of Ontario, FARFO and Le Club Fraternité d’Alexandria where he was gifted a Lifetime Membership on his 95th birthday. While coaching the Youth Bowling League, he influenced many. No doubt, they learned how to celebrate a strike with a triumphant eye-twinkle and a smile! We are so grateful that, just over a month ago, we celebrated dad on his 96th birthday. His smile and loving spirit radiated on that day. He was delighted to be surrounded by his extended family and friends who had gathered to let him know just how much he was loved and how much he meant to each and everyone of
them. What a gift this was to all of us. Mathieu impacted so many with his kind heart, generosity and outgoing nature and will be missed by all those who were privileged to have known him. Our family sincerely thanks Dr. Ghislain Marleau for the dedicated care he provided to our parents over many decades. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff and residents of the Valley Garden Residence. Your love and compassion, for both Mathieu and Thérèse in the eight years they lived in your midst, will never be forgotten. Our family is grateful for the compassionate end- of-life care provided by the staff of the Glengarry Memorial Hospital.
