A new three-year funding commitment by a local insurance group brings the Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) $250,000 closer to purchasing its first onsite CT scanner.
“Healthcare touches all of us at some point in our lives,” said Tim Shauf, President of the Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group (CMIG), when he announced the funding. “Supporting local healthcare is one of the most meaningful ways we can help strengthen the communities where our members live, work and build their lives.”
The CMIG, which has provided more than $7.2 million in direct community support to more than 670 communities across Ontario, was created in 2014 after a merger of three rural-based mutual insurance firms — Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Company, Lanark Mutual Insurance Company, and Alexandria-based Glengarry Mutual Insurance Company, which had a 130-year history in North Glengarry before the merger.
For Shauf, the funding announcement is also a reminder that meaningful community impact is built through collective action.
“Every act of giving has the potential to create a ripple effect,” he said. “When people, organizations and communities come together around a common purpose, the impact can be far greater than any one contribution alone.”
The HGMH Foundation is working to raise $3.5 million to bring the hospital’s first onsite CT scanner, which is used to obtain detailed internal images of the body, to Alexandria by March 2027.
“The CMIG is honouring its longstanding relationship with Glengarry, by investing in rural healthcare that will serve families, neighbours and future generations for years to come,” said Mark Adam, Chair of the HGMH Foundation Board of Directors.
