Students at local English schools posted a mix of gains and declines in the latest Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessments, with results varying considerably by school, grade, and subject.

EQAO released its 2025-2026 assessment results on Friday, September 25, making provincial, school board, and individual school results available to the public.

The results cover Pleasant Corners Public School, Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI), Laggan Public School, Maxville Public School, Glengarry District High School, St. Jude Catholic School, and St. Finnan’s Catholic School.

Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB)

In a press release issued Monday, September 28, the UCDSB said it recorded increases for the third consecutive year in reading, writing, and mathematics across Grades 3, 6, and 9, as well as on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), with some results surpassing provincial averages.

The board said its largest gains overall were among Grade 3 students. Mathematics increased seven percentage points to 69 per cent, writing rose seven points to 71 per cent, and reading increased six points to 77 per cent.

UCDSB Chair Jamie Schoular attributed the board’s overall improvement to new classroom practices, additional support, and greater family involvement.

“Our staff have put in an incredible amount of work to implement new practices and provide more classroom support, and our families are getting more involved,” Schoular said in the press release.

Pleasant Corners Public School

Pleasant Corners also recorded gains and declines. Grade 3 mathematics increased from 75 to 88 per cent (+13), reading declined from 89 to 86 per cent (-3), and writing increased from 75 to 86 per cent (+11).

In Grade 6, mathematics fell from 54 to 49 per cent (-5), while reading rose from 87 to 97 per cent (+10), and writing from 91 to 97 per cent (+6).

Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI)

Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute’s Grade 9 mathematics result increased from 35 to 44 per cent (+9).

The percentage of students meeting the OSSLT standard increased from 71 to 83 per cent (+12).

Laggan Public School

Laggan’s Grade 6 results showed substantial increases. Mathematics rose from 24 per cent in 2024-2025 to 57 per cent in 2025-2026 (+33 percentage points). Reading increased from 76 to 89 per cent (+13), while writing climbed from 64 to 100 per cent (+36).

Grade 3 results were more varied. Mathematics declined from 58 to 50 per cent (-8), reading increased from 81 to 83 per cent (+2), and writing fell from 69 to 58 per cent (-11).

Maxville Public School

Maxville’s 2025-2026 Grade 3 results were 67 per cent in mathematics, 60 per cent in reading, and 73 per cent in writing. Grade 3 results from the previous year were not available for comparison.

EQAO did not report Grade 6 results for 2025-2026 because of small numbers or non-participation in the current assessment.

For comparison, Maxville’s 2024-2025 Grade 6 results were 80 per cent in mathematics, 91 per cent in reading, and 100 per cent in writing.

Glengarry District High School

Glengarry District High School recorded declines in both of its reported assessments.

Grade 9 mathematics fell from 59 to 53 per cent (-6), while the OSSLT result declined from 86 to 82 per cent (-4).

Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO)

St. Jude Catholic School, Vankleek Hill

St. Jude saw increases across all six reported Grade 3 and Grade 6 results.

Grade 3 mathematics increased from 22 to 33 per cent (+11), reading from 35 to 39 per cent (+4), and writing from 22 to 47 per cent (+25).

Grade 6 mathematics increased from 11 to 40 per cent (+29), reading from 60 to 95 per cent (+35), and writing from 60 to 89 per cent (+29).

St. Finnan’s Catholic School, Alexandria

Grade 6 mathematics fell from 42 to 18 per cent (-24), while reading increased from 83 to 91 per cent (+8). Writing remained unchanged at 100 per cent.

EQAO did not report 2025-2026 Grade 3 results because of small numbers or non-participation in the current assessment. The school’s 2024-2025 Grade 3 results were 82 per cent in mathematics, 91 per cent in reading, and 82 per cent in writing.

Varying results

The local results show considerable variation despite the UCDSB’s board-wide increases.

The largest local percentage-point increase was at Laggan, where Grade 6 writing increased 36 percentage points, followed by a 33-point increase in Grade 6 mathematics.

St. Jude recorded a 35-point increase in Grade 6 reading, with 29-point increases in both Grade 6 mathematics and writing.

The largest decrease was at St. Finnan’s, where Grade 6 mathematics fell 24 points.

The results provide another year of data showing differences across local schools, grades, and subjects. More detailed information is available through the EQAO assessment data tool on its website: https://www.eqao.com/results/.
