Young Canadians with a passion for agriculture and food systems now have the opportunity to help shape the future of the industry.

The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced on May 25 that applications are now open for the fourth cohort of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council. The five-week application period invites young people from across Canada to share their ideas and perspectives on the future of agriculture and agri-food.

The council brings together young leaders from a variety of backgrounds within the agriculture sector, providing them with a platform to discuss challenges, share innovative ideas, and advise the federal government on issues affecting the industry.

The council has provided advice on topics such as attracting more young people to agriculture, using technology to improve farming practices, and responding to changes in global food trade.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 30 who work, study, or contribute to Canada’s agriculture and food systems are encouraged to apply. This includes those involved in farming, food production, sustainability initiatives, food security programs, research, innovation, and community-based food projects.

The Canadian Agricultural Youth Council was first established in 2020 and selected 25 members from more than 800 applicants. Members serve as volunteers and represent a wide range of agricultural backgrounds and regions across Canada.

The new cohort will begin its two-year term in the fall of 2026. Returning members from the third cohort will join newly selected applicants, with the council maintaining a maximum membership of 25 young leaders.

Applications are open until July 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. To apply, go to https://agriculture.canada.ca/en/department/initiatives/youth/canadian-agricultural-youth-council.
