The process of approving a new sign to direct visitors to Maxville’s various attractions continues.

On Monday, May 11, North Glengarry township council received a report and approved the draft design concept for a new sign to be located at the corner of Main Street and Fair Street to direct visitors to the Glengarry Highland Games, Maxville and District Sports Complex, the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame, and the Maxville Fair.

There is currently a sign at the corner, but it has become antiquated.

The township has applied for a grant from the province’s Rural Ontario Development Fund to assist with the estimated $80,000 to $90,000 cost of the sign. The township has been working in partnership with the destinations to be displayed on the sign and the Maxville and District Lions Club to determine the design and secure assistance with the cost of the project. Council has currently committed $15,000 in funding towards the sign project. A total of approximately $54,000 has been contributed to by community partners.

In April 2025, council first approved the idea of replacing the sign. However, comments at that time provided feedback to staff indicating preferences for the design and appearance. The new design will include an LED section with changeable messages for various events and activities. The currently proposed design also includes the township logo, Glengarry tartan, and logos of the Lions Club and other organizations associated with the destinations.

Director of Community Services Stephanie Mac Rae said the current design is not final, and she is still awaiting a response from the province about the grant application.

“Overall, I think it’s a good design,” said Deputy Mayor Carma Williams. However, she said it would be helpful to see illustrations of various design options before a final decision is made.

“There are a lot of logos on there,” Williams remarked.

Councillor Gary Martin asked what the time frame would be from design choice to installation.

Mac Rae said there are some supplier delays and believes it will be several months.

Councillor Michael Madden also said a few design options should be offered for consideration.

Mayor Jamie MacDonald cautioned that he does not want to see the Maxville sign project held up by council debating the final design.
