Two vehicles and $215,000, that’s the deal the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet has arranged to purchase a used tanker truck for the Alfred fire station. The current tanker truck has reached the end of its useful life.

On January 13, Township Council adopted a recommendation from Fire Chief Dominic Côté to acquire a used tanker truck in exchange for two used vehicles the department already owns. The new truck is a 2018 Freightliner with a capacity of 3,000 gallons. The vehicles being traded are the current Alfred and Lefaivre tanker trucks.

The supplier of the replacement vehicle is offering $10,000 in exchange for the current Alfred fire station’s tanker truck, a 2000 Sterling, and $90,000 in exchange for Lefaivre’s tanker truck, a 2007 GMC. The remainder of the cost for the single, replacement truck will come from the township’s fire department reserve fund.

A report prepared by Côté explained that discontinuing having a tanker truck in Lefaivre is consistent with Council’s previous decision to reduce municipal staff and assets, resulting in long-term savings in maintenance, insurance, and operations.
