The amount township councillors in Alfred and Plantagenet are paid is increasing in 2026.

On Tuesday, December 2, council adopted a by-law which will increase its remuneration within the 2026 municipal budget.

The mayor’s compensation has been indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which is an indicator of how inflation has affected the cost of consumer goods. The increase of the mayor’s remuneration has been indexed by two per cent and will total $55,194.27 in 2026. A report presented to council on December 2 explains the amount is consistent with the compensation of mayors in the Prescott and Russell region.

The annual compensation of councillors has been increased by 10.5 per cent from $22,632.98 to $25,009.44. The report says this amount better reflects the average compensation of councillors in the region.

The amount council members are paid to attend meetings has also been increased from $160 to $170 per meeting.

There was no discussion among council members during the presentation of the report or when the by-law was adopted.
