On Tuesday, September 9, Rigaud Municipal Council unanimously approved a by-law permitting the installation of a dedicated Consignaction beverage container return centre at 420 chemin J-René Gauthier, located at the Rigaud rest area.

This measure follows Québec’s province-wide expansion of the Consignaction deposit-return system, which aims to increase recycling rates and promote a circular economy.

Unlike returns traditionally handled through grocery stores, this centre will be a standalone facility specializing in the collection of containers.

Council approved the site’s rezoning without discussion.

A centre in Rigaud would provide the region with a closer alternative, as the closest dedicated Consignaction centres are in Lachute and Pincourt.

A construction start date has not been announced. The municipality is awaiting the project’s official submission from Consignaction.

No costs have been provided at this time.
