Firefighters from Hawkesbury, Champlain Township, and Grenville, along with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and Town of Hawkesbury enforcement officers were at the scene of a major fire in Hawkesbury on Monday, August 18.
The fire occurred at the Devcore Place de la Station residential construction site between Nelson and Higginson streets and spread to a multi-unit residential building on Higginson Street.
According to the OPP, emergency responders were called to the scene at around 10 am Monday. The fire had started in a building under construction. Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution. As a result, two structures were destroyed. No one was injured.
Smoke was visible for a considerable distance. Large chunks of ash fell on the neighbourhood for several blocks around the fire scene.
As of 4 pm Monday, fire crews remained at the scene and the area around Nelson Street East remained blocked off.
