About seven years ago, I wrote to this paper about our environmental crisis, comparing it to being in a pickup truck heading for a brick wall. Seven years later, and not much has changed, at least not for the letter. We have chosen to feed our greed for the corporate world over trying to protect the very planet we live on.
A lot has changed in the last seven years; the social media addiction is still rampant, and not only with our generation, but with all people across the board. Just remember there are more cellphones on this planet than there are people. When I see the young people cheering for the Edmonton hockey team, I question whether it is for the sport or the gambling.
Basically, right now is business as usual. Mining is out of control and deforestation is in overdrive. You need a lot of wood to build a lot of houses. Our Premier here in Ontario is introducing mini nuclear reactors, but what do we do with the mini nuclear waste? What do we do with our old massive batteries from our electric cars? What do we do with all the plastic we’re not recycling, 9.3 per cent just ain’t enough.
Politically, thanks to social media, it’s not that you want to believe in something, but that you want to disbelieve in everything else.
The bottom line is why should this planet care for us, when we don’t care for her.
Have a good day,
Andy Perrault
