Argenteuil-La Petite-Nation Member of Parliament (MP) Stéphane Lauzon is optimistic about Canada’s new Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney.

Carney was selected Liberal Leader on Sunday, March 9 and was sworn in as Prime Minister on Friday, March 14 to replace Justin Trudeau, who announced in January he would resign as Prime Minister as soon as a new Liberal Leader was selected.

Lauzon, who has most recently served as the Chair of the Québec Liberal caucus, described Carney’s administration as a new start.

“It will be a brand-new government,” he said.

Lauzon said the biggest priority is the ongoing tariff dispute with the United States and Trump’s repeated insinuations that Canada should join the US.

“We need to go very fast, and we need to deal with the US as quick as possible,” he remarked.

Parliament is currently prorogued until March 24. However, there is strong speculation that Prime Minister Carney will call an election before that time. Lauzon said an election is likely to happen “as quick as possible,” and the campaign will probably begin before March 24. Carney does not have a seat in the House of Commons and is the first Prime Minister of Canada to not already have a seat upon taking office.

The Prime Minister served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, and then as the Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.

Lauzon said Carney has the right combination of economic knowledge and progressive ideas.

As for exactly when the election will be called, Lauzon did not say, but he did note that he had leased space for his campaign headquarters in Papineauville on rue Papineau (Route 148).

Lauzon was first elected in 2015 and is seeking re-election in 2025. Currently, the only other party to have nominated a candidate for the next federal election in Argenteuil-La Petite-Nation is the Bloc Québécois. Comedian and actor Martin Héroux is the party’s candidate in the district.
