The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has increased funding it provides to individual schools for activities and related programming.
On Tuesday, October 6, Board Chair Jamie Schoular sent a message to all parents and guardians with children attending UCDSB schools announcing each school will receive an additional $500 this year to support student learning and school life. Individual school principals and school councils will decide how to specifically use the funding.
“The funds may be used for items such as recess equipment, arts supplies, musical instruments, dance programming, and other activities and resources that support student engagement, well-being and learning,” Schoular wrote.
He explained that the extra funds were available due to savings in administration and governance over the past year, primarily as a result of reducing the number of trustee meetings from twice a month to five times a year.
“Rather than retaining those savings centrally, the funds will be reinvested directly into schools,” wrote Schoular.
Schoular, who is from Perth, and is a former principal and a current parent, said he knows families want to see resources go where they make the greatest difference for students and is pleased the board decided to redirect the savings into school budgets for items and activities.
Local UCDSB schools are Pleasant Corners Public School, Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI), Laggan Public School, Maxville Public School, and Glengarry District High School.
