The Township of North Glengarry will be upgrading its wastewater infrastructure in Alexandria and Maxville in order to open new housing opportunities thanks to a deal with the Ontario Government.

“Our government is making record investments in local infrastructure to help protect communities, create jobs, unlock more housing and drive economic growth,” said David Piccini, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure. “In the Township of North Glengarry, we’re investing in expanded wastewater services to help unlock 4,000 new homes through our $4 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Plan.”

The deal will expand the scope of the township’s wastewater infrastructure project that was funded through Ontario’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (MHIP-HEWSF), and will include expansion of the Maxville Lagoon system, upgrades and expansion of the Maxville Main Sewage Pumping Station, upgrades to the Alexandria Main Sewage Pumping Station, as well as additional wastewater improvements in Alexandria to support new housing.

“This agreement demonstrates the value of infrastructure planning and partnerships with the Government of Ontario,” said Michael Fawthrop, Chief Administrative Officer of the Township of North Glengarry. “[With] savings from the Alexandria Lagoon Expansion tender process, the township has been able to expand the original project and additional infrastructure priorities, including the Maxville Lagoon Expansion, amongst several other wastewater infrastructure improvements, without increasing either the township’s or the province’s overall funding commitment.”

The infrastructure investments will more than double wastewater treatment capacity in both Alexandria and Maxville, creating servicing capacity equivalent to approximately 3,210 residential units in Alexandria and 811 residential units in Maxville. According to the Township, this additional capacity will help address local housing demand and advance the township’s long-term development objectives.
