For 20 years, Evelyn Bernique helped make the Vankleek Hill Fair possible, and on Thursday, August 13, she was honoured for her years of service.
Bernique was presented with a certificate in recognition for 20 years as Secretary and Treasurer of the Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society by Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) President Heather Owens at the fair’s opening ceremony.
For fair ticket vendors, regular visits from Bernique to replenish inventory and collect money were a seasonal tradition in Vankleek Hill. Her careful attention to detail, honesty, and dedication were always evident and appreciated.
Bernique was noticeably touched by the recognition of her service to the fair. She said other Agricultural Society members are more deserving.
“There’s 40 other people here who deserve it,” she said.
Bernique said her involvement with the Agricultural Society began when former President Jeff LeRoy said he needed a volunteer and asked for her help.
Receiving special recognition from the OAAS was a total surprise to Bernique. She attended the opening ceremony with her husband Gerry and their son Steven, who lives in Smiths Falls. However, she did wonder if something out of the ordinary was happening when Steven called her and insisted his parents attend the opening ceremony with him.
“I figured there was something going on,” she said.
Bernique has stepped back from her role with the Agricultural Society’s executive, but she still plans to keep helping with its activities, including the annual fair.
“I love the fair, our little town, and volunteering,” she said.
In addition to involvement with the Agricultural Society, Evelyn Bernique has also volunteered with the annual Russell Gauley Pancake Breakfast, the Vankleek Seniors Manor Board, and the Ladies Association at St. Jude’s Parish.
