To the Editor,
Two years ago, the Prescott & Russell Development Corporation engaged Deloitte to provide the 2024-2029 Prescott Russell Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan for the counties. The plan identifies energy storage as a regional strength for which municipalities in Prescott-Russell should prepare marketing prospectuses.
Large energy projects in Ontario require a municipal support resolution. This gives municipalities direct influence over whether or not they proceed. A proactive approach would identify suitable sites, set expectations for community benefits, and streamline the approval process – attracting investment while protecting community interests and natural heritage locations.
Not far away, Ottawa is benefiting from its support for two large battery energy storage projects to the tune of $400,000 per year in community benefit payments for the next 20 years. About $750,000 per year in new property tax revenue is expected on a few dozen acres in the South March and Trail Road areas of the city, with essentially no demand on city services. https://cafesottawa.ca/energy-the-missing-piece-in-ottawas-rural-economicdevelopment-plan/
Energy storage seems like a promising opportunity here as well. It can be a key rural industry alongside agriculture, construction and tourism.
