With nominations now open for Ontario’s 2026 municipal elections, early candidates have begun to file in Champlain Township. As of Wednesday, May 6, the township’s unofficial list of candidates includes five individuals seeking various council positions.
Champlain Township is divided into four wards: Vankleek Hill, L’Orignal, Longueuil, and West Hawkesbury, with two councillors elected in each.
According to the township’s published list of nominations received, incumbent mayor Normand Riopel has filed to seek re-election, while several candidates have also entered the race for council.
In Ward 3 – Longueuil, incumbent councillor Paul Burroughs has filed nomination papers, along with Claude Laflamme. In Ward 4 – West Hawkesbury, incumbent councillor Gerry Miner has also filed and will be joined on the ballot by Greg Ross.
The nomination period runs until Friday, August 21, with election day scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026.
More candidates are expected to file in the coming weeks as the nomination period continues.
