Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital is welcoming two new doctors to its medical team, adding more support in the emergency department and launching a new physical medicine service.

In a news release, HGMH announced Dr. Wael Badawy will be joining the emergency department physicians while Dr. Jacqueline Cochrane will provide support to inpatients through the hospital’s first physiatry service.

According to the hospital, Badawy recently completed his medical residency at McGill University. Before that, he worked in Cairo, Egypt, as a dermatologist and in Canada as a part-time lecturer on occupational safety practices.

“I was immediately drawn to HGMH by its friendly and welcoming environment,” Badawy said in the news release. “The staff’s professionalism, combined with a well-organized and efficient structure, made it clear that this is a place where both patients and health-care providers are supported.”

HGMH said Badawy joining the emergency department will boost the hospital’s ability to provide “timely, expert, and compassionate services to patients and families.”

The hospital is also expanding its offered services in hiring Cochrane, a specialist in stroke care and spasticity management.

The hospital said her experience includes addressing neurological disorders, fatigue and mood disorders, behavioural issues and swallowing difficulties. It added offering physiatry services in Alexandria means patients won’t have to travel outside the region for care. In the past, patients were referred to Ottawa.

“We are delighted to welcome both Dr. Badawy to our emergency department and Dr. Cochrane to lead the introduction of physiatry services at HGMH,” hospital President and CEO Robert Alldred-Hughes said in the news release. “Their expertise and dedication to patient care will not only strengthen our emergency response but also enhance rehabilitation and recovery for our patients.”

The physiatry program is expected to begin with a focus on referred inpatients with plans to expand to outpatient support in the future.
