An expert on the ethics of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) will be speaking in Vankleek Hill on Thursday, September 11.
Dr. Christy Simpson, who is originally from the Vankleek Hill area, will be speaking about MAID at Trinity United Church in Vankleek Hill.
Presented by the Genesis Cooperative of local United Church of Canada congregations, Dr. Simpson will present Understanding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID); What it is and what it isn’t. She will provide an overview of MAID, including how Canadian society evolved to its current position on the subject and touch on continuing discussions.
Dr. Simpson is the former Head of the Department of Bioethics in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax and continues to serve there as an Associate Professor. She is a practicing health care ethicist for Nova Scotia Health, working with health care teams, patients, and/or families in addressing difficult decisions. Dr. Simpson also helps develop new policies and teaches all levels of staff at both rural and urban hospitals.
Dr. Simpson is the co-author of a textbook titled Rethinking Rural Health Ethics and is an internationally published author and speaker. She is a recognized leader in health ethics in Canada and is a past president of the Canadian Bioethics Society. Dr. Simpson also serves as an ethicist with Canadian Blood Services and has been involved with national projects related to the use of blood products, organ donation, and transplantation.
The Understanding MAID presentation at Trinity United Church in Vankleek Hill begins at 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 11. A light meal will also be served at 6:30 pm.
