The Prescott County 4-H club hosted a most enjoyable evening for 4-H youth Monday evening, July 28 at Elmlane Farms on Cassburn Road. Twenty-five 4-H youth attended from Prescott, Glengarry and Russell counties and judged five classes (dairy heifers, maple syrup, white bread, milking goats and beef showboxes) after a barbeque and desserts. The youth also completed an Identification Quiz to test their knowledge on subjects including animal feed, square dancing, and needle crafts.

4-H members exercised judgement, critical thinking and decision making when assessing each entry and placed them first, second and so forth. Members then exercised communication skills by presenting reasons for their placements. Judging criteria included correct confirmation, appearance, taste, aroma, and organization.

The Prescott County 4-H Association would like to thank Scott, Faye, Chris, and Becky Allen for hosting the event at Elmlane Farm and Ian Fraser, Kenda Allen and Melanie Herry for their volunteer time judging and listening to members’ reasons. We would also like to thank the parents and members for their support and home-made cookies!

4-H is a wholesome program for youth (aged 6-21) to learn about agriculture, homemaking, and other topics such as financial management, conservation, technology etc. Members enjoy hands-on experience and mentorship. The 4 Hs represent: Head, Heart, Hands and Health! There are typically six meetings for each club followed by an Achievement Event for graduation. 4-H’s motto is “Learn by Doing”. Please see The Prescott County 4-H Facebook Page or visit the website: 4-hontario.ca  for more information.
