Hawkesbury marked Canada Day on Tuesday, July 1, with a flag-raising ceremony at Confederation Park. The event commemorated the 158th anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

Celebrations also featured Canadiana-themed shows and art expositions on the Ottawa River waterfront, near Le Chenail Cultural Centre. Live musical performances by Les Castors Célestes, the Aaron Wylder Trio, and Les Couleurs de Wandara brought music and energy to the festivities.

Prescott-Russell-Cumberland Member of Parliament (MP) Giovanna Mingarelli said Canada Day represents a time when Canadians can come together and remember “those who built this country, the strength of our communities, and the future we are building together.”

“Enjoy this important and beautiful day with your loved ones,” Mingarelli concluded.

Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Stéphane Sarrazin called the special occasion “a good opportunity for us to realize how good we have it in Canada as citizens. For the more than 50 towns in the riding celebrating, we collectively remember the hard-fought freedoms that we continue to enjoy today.”

Hawkesbury Mayor Robert Lefebvre closed off the ceremony by thanking the Hawkesbury Legion and organizers, “including the young cadets we have here today. We are marking the 158th anniversary of confederation. So let us all celebrate!”

“We have the most beautiful country in the world, where we are welcoming and always respectful to everyone. Let’s continue to celebrate that,” Lefebvre said.
