Former Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry Member of Parliament (MP) Guy Lauzon died on Sunday, June 22. He was 81.

Lauzon represented the riding, which included all of SD&G except for North Glengarry from 2004 to 2019, as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. He retired in 2019 and was succeeded as MP by Eric Duncan, his former Executive Assistant.

“For me, Guy was a boss, a mentor, and most importantly, a friend,” Duncan said in a social media post on Monday, June 23.

“He was a man who truly set the bar for those serving in public life,” remarked Duncan.

SD&G Counties Warden Martin Lang described Lauzon as a “remarkable man” and highlighted the benefits he had brought to the region as its federal representative.

“From securing 217 Service Canada call centre jobs for Cornwall in 2009, to championing revitalization on main streets in places like Martintown, Guy supported the construction of new playgrounds, outdoor rinks, bridge repairs and community halls throughout SDG Counties. His work is visible in every corner of our community,” Lang said in a press release.

Before entering politics, Lauzon was a federal public servant and manager of a soybean processing plant in Winchester. During his service as an MP, Lauzon served as Conservative Caucus Chair.

“Guy Lauzon was such a good person. As CPC caucus chair he dedicated a lot of time helping out a rookie MP from Durham after being thrown into things in a by-election. The epitome of class,” said former MP and Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole in an X post.

Lauzon had previously undergone cancer treatment in 2022. He was predeceased by his second wife Frances in 2021.
