The People’s Party of Canada (PPC) candidate in Prescott-Russell Cumberland says she decided to try politics out of personal obligation.

Deborah Perrier introduced herself to United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) council on Wednesday, March 26. Perrier said she was not drawn to politics out of personal ambition, but out of desire to “return Canada” to return to a series of ideals.

To Perrier and the PPC, those ideals are their concept of freedom of speech, individual rights, and the government not allegedly “dictating” the rights of citizens.

“We believe in healthy immigration and national unity,” Perrier remarked.

The right-wing PPC was founded in 2018 by Maxime Bernier, a former cabinet minister in the government of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In 2016, Bernier narrowly lost the leadership election to succeed Harper. He left the Conservative Party and then founded the PPC and remains its leader.

Perrier said fiscal responsibility and individual responsibility are major aspects of PPC ideals.

“We must return to policies that put Canadians first,” she said.

Perrier has lived in Prescott-Russell-Cumberland for more than three years. She was a nurse for more than 30 years and most recently worked as a public servant.

“I know that what matters most here are the same things that matter to all Canadians,” Perrier said.
