On Monday, March 24, North Glengarry council unanimously awarded a contract to GIP Paving for gravel roadwork in the municipality. The contract will cost $384,540 plus HST and includes materials and labour.
The contract exceeds the allocated budget by approximately $10,000 due to rising material costs. For 2025, council had budgeted $375,000, down from the original $420,000, for gravel resurfacing work.
However, staff stated that there was an unstated amount of gravel left over from 2024, allowing North Glengarry to purchase less of the needed material.
In rural and unpaved areas, gravel is essential for road construction and maintenance, ensuring durability and safety. Annual gravel work is necessary to ensure road integrity and proper water drainage.
To optimize costs, Public Works conducts road surveys to assess which areas require additional gravel and maintenance.
In 2025, GIP Paving will source 26,000 tonnes of gravel from the local MacMillan Quarry in Laggan.
