On February 24, North Glengarry council requested alternate dates for this summer’s iteration of Meet Me on Main Street in the region. Staff originally presented council with four dates for the 2025 events in Dunvegan or Apple Hill, Maxville, Alexandria, and Dalkeith that would take place in June, July, and August.
Staff informed council that the Community Development Committee had met in January and discussed possible dates. The committee also considered scaling back the events from six to four, with the tentative schedule being Saturday, June 14, in Dunvegan or Apple Hill, Thursday, June 26, in Maxville, Thursday, July 24 in Alexandria, and concluding in Dalkeith on Saturday, August 16.
The hamlets of Dunvegan and Apple Hill would alternate every other year as opposed to annually, with Dalkeith and Glen Robertson doing the same.
Councillor Jeff Manley agreed with the idea of reducing the events down to four annually.
A report to council further stated that hosting these events on a weekday evening allows for after-work and after-school attendance from the community while also providing weekday entertainment that would not compete with some of the popular weekend festivities in North Glengarry.
Manley said he also wanted to see more local talent participate in the events, rather than only having a couple of main acts rotate among the different areas. He further encouraged staff to keep the food and beverage options as local as possible.
Councillor Gary Martin said, “I would like to try to get the Maxville date moved because we have the fair on the one weekend, then Canada Day right after that, and to throw a third event in the middle of that could create issues.”
Martin then suggested a potential early-September date instead, saying that the weather is usually still acceptable at that time of year.
Council deferred finalizing the scheduled dates to a future council meeting once appropriate changes have been made.
