At the February 27 meeting, Champlain Township council unanimously approved waiving the permit requirements for this year’s Community Garage Sale weekend. Waiving the permit requirement for Friday, June 6, Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, makes it possible again for vendors to set up at the annual Trash and Treasure town-wide yard sale in Vankleek Hill on Saturday, June 7. The annual event is organized by the Vankleek Hill Business and Merchant Association (BMA).

Garage sale permit requirements have been waived for all Champlain Township residents on June 6, 7, and 8, 2025, to encourage continued community engagement, promoting local commerce, and attracting others to the region.

Trash and Treasure has been held annually for more than 21 years.

Councillor Gerry Miner sought clarification on the wording presented to council: “Is this only to cancel the fee, because it says waiver of garage sale requirements?”

Staff responded that individuals would not need to apply for the permit or pay the associated fee. Garage sale permits are normally $5 for the first sale and are valid for three days, with the cost rising to $35 for each subsequent garage sale.

Out-of-town residents are invited to bring items for sale for a small fee, with the BMA organizing a location within the business section of Vankleek Hill. Interested participants should contact Louise Sproule at [email protected] as soon as possible to reserve an approximate 10 x 10 space for $25.
