Billy Allen and his wife Angel Legault have given an owl named Chance a second chance.
Allen had just returned home from work on Sunday, February 2 to his home on Highway 34 near Vankleek Hill and saw an object about 500 feet from the driveway.
“I saw what I thought was a piece of dirty ice, and upon driving past I saw it was the owl on the shoulder of the road,” he said.
Allen gently picked up the injured owl, tucked it under his arm, and drove to his house. He went inside and woke up Legault, and as he said “the adventure began.” Allen posted on Facebook that he had found the injured bird and needed help about how to help it.
Eventually, Allen and Legault found the answer they were looking for and took the owl to the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre near Ashton Station, west of Ottawa. The facility provides veterinary care, feeding, and accommodation while they recover and prepare for a return to life in the wild.
Allen and Legault discovered that finding an owl is quite significant. In some cultures, it is even a sign of wisdom or a message. Encountering an owl is something that only happens by chance, and that is what Allen and Legault named their unexpected guest, Chance.
Allen said the chance discovery of Chance was “crazy awesome.”
