At the January 13 committee of adjustment meeting, North Glengarry council approved rezoning the former Maxville High School property at 56 Mechanic Street to allow MacEwen Petroleum to construct a new head office building.

Located on the corner of Prince Street and Mechanic Street West, the proposed office building will be 16,102 square feet and include an 85-vehicle parking lot.

The future project falls under the 2018 Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry (SDG) Counties Official Plan, where “growth is the goal to direct most forms of development to supply efficient land use.” The proposed office building matches the aesthetics of the Maxville community and will play a role in the village’s development.

MacEwen Petroleum approached the township requesting the site’s zoning by-laws be changed from residential second density to general commercial, allowing for the development of the two-storey building.

Council heard that the property in question is not subject to constraints such as natural hazards, significant woodlands, natural heritage systems, source water protection, or geological barriers. Additionally, there were no objections or comments made by members of the public.

“It’s nice to see something going up there,” Mayor Jamie MacDonald said.

The last zoning change occurred in 2015 when the site was changed from institutional to general industrial to allow for the present Cardlock fuel depot at 18 Adelaide Street. The remaining land was zoned as residential-on-hold for potential residential development.

“I’m just wondering whether or not they’re specific about the kind of greenery that’s going in there. Do we know if it’s going to be grass and bushes, or are they going to be planting trees? I think it’s a good idea if we encourage them to plant trees there,” Deputy Mayor Carma Williams suggested.

The site plan for the proposed head office building is currently in development, and the completed design will be presented for further discussion at a future council meeting.
