To The Editor,
I attended the exhibition hockey game between Kazakhstan and the Hawkesbury Hawks (on December 21) and was most disappointed by the lack of hospitality extended by both the town and our hockey club officials. There was no pre-game ceremony as the puck dropped at 7 pm with nary a welcome from the mayor or one of the six councillors. It would have been the perfect opportunity to welcome the visiting team and the many Kazakhs in attendance, as well as do a little showcasing of our town. Furthermore, it is common for teams to exchange gifts at the outset of such a match. While the visitors had a gift for Hawkesbury, there was no reciprocation. As Kazakhstan won the game, at least their national anthem was played.
Opportunities such as this are infrequent and when they do arise, it should not be squandered.
