On November 28, council unanimously passed a by-law reducing the speed limit on four municipal roads. Pattee Road, Maplewood Drive, Deslauriers Street, and Eldemer Street will be lowered to 50 km/h.

Safety concerns were cited at the meeting as the main reason for implementing the new by-law as the four roads currently have a speed limit of 60 km/h. This includes the safety of children who play, meet, and walk together on these streets.

More than 25 individuals residing on Pattee Road signed a petition to lower the speed limit and submitted their request to council in August 2024, constituting 90 per cent of the civic addresses on the street. A minimum of 75 per cent of residents must sign a petition to have a speed limit change considered by council.

The Public Works Department also supported this request, believing that the speed reduction is warranted for the area. All materials, suppliers, and labour will cost Champlain Township an estimated $1,000 and is covered under the Public Works 2024 operating budget.
