On November 12, Grenville-sur-la-Rouge Council received the 2023 auditor’s Financial Report outlining a significant surplus. The report was highlighted by Councillor Denis Fillion and demonstrated the municipality’s financial progress.
Grenville-sur-la-Rouge originally projected revenue at $7,836,085 for 2023 and included both functional and investment income. However, the auditor’s report noted a realized value of $9,805,016. After deducting municipal expenses, a surplus of $957,080 was determined. This represented an increase of 44.2 per cent or $293,304 from the 2022 surplus amount.
Mayor Tom Arnold stated in his summary that even with earlier challenges faced by Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, the financial stability of the municipality is not in question thanks to the efforts of the municipal team.
Multiple investment projects were undertaken in 2023, including the reparation and refurbishment of municipal roads comprising chemin Avoca, chemin Harrington, and chemin de la rivière Rouge. Other municipal investments were the purchase of a new truck for the Public Works Department, a van for transporting municipal staff, and some new equipment for the Fire Department.
An itemized list of 2023 municipal income and expenditures can be found on the municipality’s website for an additional detailed breakdown.
Delays to the release of the 2023 Financial Report were caused by adding additional information to the budget, Mayor Arnold explained. The 2025 budget planning and subsequent discussion will be tabled to Council in January 2025 and will be passed as soon as reasonably possible.
How the surplus amount will be utilized in the municipality has yet to be decided and will be included in the upcoming 2024 Financial Report.
