Fire seriously damaged a residential duplex in Vankleek Hill during the evening of Sunday, November 17.
At 6:23 pm, the Champlain Township Fire Department Vankleek Hill station received a call for a structure fire. Two trucks from Vankleek Hill responded and then two more trucks from the L’Orignal station were dispatched.
According to Champlain Township Fire Chief Ghislain Pigeon, the fire started in a shed in the backyard extended to the south wall of the house and progressed to the attic. The fire was quickly brought under control, but extensive damage had already been caused. All occupants were able to evacuate the building. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.
Pigeon said the damage to the building will make it uninhabitable for some time. The residents were able to find temporary accommodation.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), paramedics, and Hydro One also assisted at the scene.
A crew of firefighters remained at the property overnight into Monday, November 18. Pigeon said a cause would be determined on Monday.
