As the last bridge in Alexandria’s urban area in need of major work, Centre Street Bridge will need to be completely replaced. There were no viable patching or repair alternatives available to the Township of North Glengarry Council presented at the September 30 council meeting.

The Public Works department recommended to the council that, because of the similarities of the project previously undertaken on Dominion and Bishop Street earlier in the year, the engineering work be contracted to HP Engineering. The company will be holding their 2023 rates originally provided to the Township and the detailed design will cost $26,641.40.

Mayor Jamie MacDonald asked Director of Public Works Timothy Wright to provide the council with the amount of the previous reconstruction project in the region to compare the potential costs of completion. The budget for the Dominion Street Bridge was set at $1.3 million and the Public Works department is currently under this amount, Wright assured the council.

HP Engineering will later provide the Township with an estimate of the hours and work needed to replace the Centre Street Bridge for the upcoming tendering season in early 2025. By utilizing HP Engineering, the Township would be using the lowest bidder for the competitively procured work.
